Vernazza, I’m in Love
There are two things that I remember most about our short trip to Vernazza and they both involve Il Pirata, the restaurant we ended up eating dinner at this day. We had originally made reservations at Belforte, which we were really excited to try, since we’d heard great reviews and there was said to be a wonderful view, but Il Pirata was rated #1 and as soon as we got there, we knew why.
It was a double take kind of moment
Our experience there was one of the best we’d had in Italy. To set the scene, it was about 4PM (super early for dinner in Italy) since our plan was to try their cannoli and one of their pasta dishes and then head to Belforte, however, as soon as we stepped in we were greeted by the chef – a Sicilian man who was equal parts sarcastic and kind. He made us belly laugh multiple times in just a few minutes. We told him that we were just here to have a couple of things before our dinner, and he understood, but like any Italian, they talk you into eating more, and trying more etc. During his plea to have us try more of his food, he was also telling us the reason behind the lackluster views, as there was a mudslide years back. But the lack of view didn’t bother us, because we were so caught up with how amazing awesome this man was, we wanted to stay forever! Once we placed an order for capriccio, that he told us we had to try (which I didn’t realize was raw meat until I ate half the plate) – he went to make it for us.
Not a minute later, he came back out dressed in a waiter’s outfit – the confusion on our faces was priceless. There are two of them. They are twins (said like, ‘tweeins’). As soon as we realized this we couldn’t contain our laughs. It was honestly like something out of a movie. The two brothers were playing off each other, picking on one another, and it was amazing to experience. Clearly the waiter brother was the boss and the chef brother was – as waiter put it – ‘more immature.’ We loved it. After ordering so much more food, missing our original reservation at Belforte, and enjoying their company, we decided it was time to catch our train back to Monterosso. I will never forget the experience we had with the two brothers, and the fact that I downed half a plate of raw meat – something I never thought I’d do, made this day unforgettable. I can’t wait to get back there and have everything on the menu. OH! And the cannoli was the BEST cannoli I’ve had in my entire life – I went to bed that night dreaming I’d married one. We dove into it before I had the patience to take the photo.
